Djibouti --> Dire Dawa --> Jijiga --> Hargeisa (Somaliland)
Why indeed? Probably for completeness: suffice to say we bunked in Dire Dawa again getting stuck into some local beer and walked around the parts of the city that we missed before. We also found out where the tourist information office is: at the airport (so we didn't go).
Heading to Somaliland the next launchpad from Ethiopia is the wee town of Jijiga. We rolled into town in the mid-afternoon, did a little hunting for a hotel and chanced upon one near the bus station and looked around. It's actually quite a decent town and one which apparently has very few tourists judging by the number of groupies that we picked up walking around - it's normal to get people shouting out salutations or tagging along just that Jijigites did this en masse. Fortuitously we also dined at a restaurant operated by a Somalilander who gave us the lowdown about Somaliland.
Full of food and tips we caught the bus to Wajaale on the Ethiopian side of the border early the next morning. The most surprising thing about the scenery was that we ended up on a high, wind-swept plateau surrounded by pasture: no water shortage here. And so it was that, buffeted by a chill, gusty breeze, we crossed into Somaliland.
